Grade Level: 1st Grade
Topic: Weather
ESL Level: Beginner
Time: 40–45 minutes
Target Vocabulary: Sunny, cloudy, rainy, snowy, windy, hot, cold
Objectives:
By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:
Identify common types of weather using simple vocabulary
Answer the question: "What's the weather like today?"
Match weather words to pictures
Participate in a simple weather song and activity
Materials Needed:
Flashcards or images of different weather types
Whiteboard and markers
Speaker or device to play music
Printed worksheets (matching or drawing)
Crayons or colored pencils
Weather wheel (optional)
Lesson Procedure:
1. Warm-Up (5 minutes)
Greet the class and do a short review of greetings and how they’re feeling.
Use Total Physical Response (TPR): Point outside and ask, “What’s the weather like today?” (Help students answer with gestures, e.g., fanning themselves for hot, shivering for cold.)
2. Presentation (10 minutes)
Show weather flashcards one by one.
Say the word clearly, and have students repeat it with you. Use exaggerated facial expressions and TPR (e.g., pretend to shiver for "cold," open an umbrella for "rainy").
Practice with each word 2–3 times.
3. Practice (10 minutes)
Game: Weather Charades
Act out a weather type and have students guess.
Then call on individual students to act out a weather type while others guess.
Weather Song
Play a weather song like “What’s the Weather Like Today?” (e.g., Dream English Weather Song)
Sing and do the actions together.
4. Production (10 minutes)
Worksheet Activity
Distribute a worksheet where students match weather words to pictures or draw their favorite weather.
Walk around and help them with vocabulary as needed.
Weather Wheel (optional)
Create or use a weather wheel with movable parts. Let each child spin and say, “It’s ___ today!”
5. Wrap-Up & Review (5 minutes)
Review vocabulary using flashcards again.
Ask 2–3 students, “What’s the weather like today?” and support them in answering.
Give positive reinforcement and stickers/stamps if available.
Assessment:
Observe participation during songs and TPR.
Check worksheet completion for understanding.
Listen for accurate pronunciation and vocabulary recall.
Extension Ideas:
Create a daily weather chart to update each morning.
Read a simple storybook about the weather (e.g., Maisy’s Wonderful Weather Book).
Watch short ESL videos about the weather in future lessons.
